Who is a Refugee?

Throughout history, whenever people have fled from war or persecution, there have been refugees. However, it wasn't until 1951, just after World War Two, that the international community formally recognised the status of these people. The United Nations approved the Convention outlining the Status of Refugees on July 28, 1951 at a special conference set up to deal with the one million people left homeless by the war.

Article One of the Convention defines a refugee as:
A person who is outside his/her country of nationality or habitual residence; has a well founded fear of persecution because of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group of political opinion;and is unable or unwilling to avail himself/herself of the protection of that country, or to return there, for fear of persecution.

BBC History - War and Conflict - The Troubles
This excellent site covers all aspects of the Irish conflict from origins to present day. There are fact files which explain many aspects and a search facility for specific facts.

Encyclopedia Britannica Online
You will need the password for this (available from the Library). Look at the general articles for Ireland and Northern Ireland following the article outlines for the topics you need, or search for specific names of people, places and events.

Look for books in the Library Catalogue (available from school computers only).

Think about how you are going to approach this task before you begin. Write down a plan and check back to see that you are covering all aspects of the assigned task from time to time. The Library page has a Research Process Checklist that you can use as a guide.

Issues raised under the theme of Reverence for Life include:

If you want to investigate a few topics before you decide, or need a comprehensive introduction, here are a few tips:

Use a good general encyclopedia, like Britannica Online, and be sure to look for links to related articles. Seek especially ethical and moral aspects. (Password required for Britannica - check a Library bookmark or ask at the Library)
To find issues recently discussed within the Church look at Catholic publications, like The Catholic Weekly (held by the Library, and searchable online) and Catholic Outlook (held by the Library, and current edition available online).
The Library holds many resources for loan on these topics, but will hold a few books at the desk which are relevant to multiple issues - especially those with Catholic perspectives.

Year 10 - Researching Issues

Do some preliminary reading about topics of interest from the Library, on the internet or from newspapers and magazines.

Once you have chosen your topic, write down search terms for using the library catalogue, search engines and indexes. If your search does not show any results try alternative terms. For example, "domestic violence" will yield few results, but "family violence" or "violence" will lead you to good resources.
